Unity to rely on Prime Minister’s vision for Kariņš’s future in Latvian government

The board members of Unity political party rely on Prime Minister Evika Siliņa’s vision regarding the remainder of Krišjānis Kariņš as the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
When asked if she believes Kariņš should step down from his post as minister if the scandal with private flights ends up a criminal process of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Unity board members, Saeima speaker Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica told LETA that she fully trusts the PM’s vision, which is expected to be announced after her meeting with Kariņš on Thursday, the 28th of March.
When asked the same question, Unity board member and its Saeima faction chairman Edmunds Jurēvics told LETA that PM Siliņa is the one in charge of the coalition and government, and the politician fully trusts her work, as well as assessment and vision for the management of future political processes. The politician also said he is aware the two politicians plan to discuss the situation on Thursday.
Jurēvics stressed that he values the work Kariņš did as the PM during the pandemic and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Generally New Unity as a party and faction, as well as board are united for future work in the existing coalition to achieve objectives,” said New Unity’s Saeima faction leader.
Unity board member, Saeima deputy Ainars Latkovskis said he relies on the PM’s decision.

He also said he does not have information to suggest Siliņa may invite Kariņš to step down as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

When asked how united Unity is in this situation, JV board member staid the party is united and “naysayers have nothing to celebrate”.
Kalniņa-Lukaševica said currently Kariņš is away on an important visit. He has already met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and the two have discussed Latvia’s security and support for Ukraine. Siliņa, on the other hand, is on a visit to Germany, where she plans to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This means Thursday is the soonest Kariņš and Siliņa will be able to meet.
As previously reported, PM Siliņa plans to meet with Kariņš on the 28th of March to discuss the situation with the scandal involving the use of private flights during his term as Latvian PM.
