Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a total of 28 920 Ukrainian civilians have been registered in Latvia as refugees. 23 066 of them have been issued with residents permits with employment rights, according to the latest information from Ministry of the Interior.
With assistance from the Civil Protection Commission housing has been provided to 10 691 people. This means the rest of the refugees find housing on their own, at family or friends, as previously reported by Minister of the Interior Marija Golubeva.
Ukrainian residents who have biometric passports and do not require social aid or assistance with housing are allowed to remain in Latvia for up to 90 days without informing authorities.
The government recently approved the Ukrainian war refugees support plan. The funding for this plan is estimated at EUR 116.277 million.
This plan was prepared to provide aid to up to 40 000 Ukrainian civilians.
The government also previously decided that once 30 000 Ukrainian refugees arrive in Latvia, seven biggest cities will have to resettle a total of 14 876, of which more than half would go to Riga.
The number of refugees to be distributed among municipalities is based on the number of residents in each administrative territory.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, millions of people have been forced to leave their homes.
