The confirmed death toll from the catastrophic floods and landslides in the Himalayas, affecting Nepal and China’s Tibet region, has surpassed 1,000, according to figures released by authorities on Tuesday.
A total of 4,462 people are reported missing.
The disaster, which began last Wednesday morning, has claimed 987 lives in Nepal, bringing the combined death toll in Nepal and China to 1,003.
As search and rescue operations continue for a seventh day, the number of bodies recovered has risen.
At the same time, the number of people listed as missing and whose fate remains unknown has declined. In Nepal, 3,916 people are currently reported missing.
In China’s Tibet region, 16 people have been confirmed dead and 546 remain missing, according to broadcaster CCTV.
Authorities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh said 17 bodies had been recovered from rivers flowing into India from Nepal. They are believed to be victims of the floods.
Indian authorities are working to identify the bodies, which have not been included in the overall death toll.
