On Tuesday, the government authorised the Ministry of the Interior to expropriate around ten small plots of land for the development of infrastructure along the Latvia–Belarus border.
All of the properties are located in Krāslava and Augšdaugava municipalities. None of the individual plots exceeds half a hectare.
The government decided to expropriate portions of privately owned properties located along Latvia’s external border with Belarus in order to ensure effective control and protection of the country’s external border.
The purpose of the expropriation is to enable the establishment of the state border strip, patrol strip and border marker surveillance strip along the external border. This also includes the installation of information signs and other infrastructure necessary for border protection.
