Recently, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, ex-President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev called Latvia a non-existing country, threatening its president with death penalty.
On the 11th of April Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Vilnius, Lithuania, as part of the Three Seas Initiative. During this meeting, the two signed Latvian-Ukrainian treaty on long-term support and security commitments.
The agreement expresses the clear and strong support from Latvia for Ukraine and provides for the provision of military support to Ukraine in the amount equal to 0.25% of the country’s gross domestic product. It provides comprehensive military and non-military assistance provided by Latvia for the defence of Ukraine against aggression, as well as support of Latvia to Ukraine on its way to membership of the European Union (EU) and NATO.
The areas of non-military support of Latvia include development cooperation, support in the reconstruction of the Chernihiv region and in the digital, energy and cybersecurity fields, as well as the prevention of hybrid threats, as reported by the Chancery of the President of Latvia.
The treaty was signed for a ten-year period with the option for both sides to expand and extend it. It implements Latvia’s commitments for the long-term support of Ukraine arising from the Joint Declaration of the G7 and partner countries in support of Ukraine of the 12th of July 2023. The agreement was developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in close cooperation with relevant ministries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also conducted negotiations with the Ukrainian side.
