US President-elect Donald Trump wants to end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 100 days of his inauguration, Trump’s pick for special peace envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, told Fox News on Wednesday, the 8th of January, reports The Kyiv Independent.
The comments came a day after Trump announced at a press conference that he would not start peace talks until after his inauguration, although he repeatedly promised during his campaign that talks to end the war would start as soon as he was elected.
“This war has to end, and I think he can do it in the near future,” said Kellogg, defining “near future” as 100 days after the inauguration.
He added that he did not want to speak for Trump, but that his personal and professional goal was to help Trump find a solution.
“People need to understand that he [Trump] is not trying to give something to Putin or the Russians, he’s actually trying to save Ukraine and preserve its sovereignty,” Kellogg said in an interview with Fox News. “And he’s going to make sure that it’s equitable and it’s fair.”
Kellogg praised Trump for his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that US President Joe Biden’s refusal to engage with Putin was his “biggest mistake”. He said that Trump would work to find a solution that would satisfy both Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I think they will come to a solution in the near future… Let’s set it at a hundred days,” he said.
Kellogg had planned a visit to Kyiv, which was reportedly postponed after Trump’s inauguration.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that at least 13 people were killed and 113 wounded in a Russian guided bomb attack in Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday. Public transport, apartment blocks and other infrastructure were damaged in the strike.
“There is nothing more cruel than launching aerial bombs on a city knowing that ordinary civilians will suffer,” said Zelenskyy.
The regional governor declared Thursday an official day of mourning.
