US President Donald Trump has called Tehran’s response to American conditions for ending the war “completely unacceptable”, writes the BBC.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iran’s proposals included an immediate cessation of hostilities, an end to the US naval blockade and guarantees not to attack Iran in the future. Tehran has conveyed its demands through Pakistan.
Last week, Trump said that the US-Israeli war with Iran would soon end, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that all enriched uranium must be removed from Iran before there can be talk of an end to the war.
Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga has not directly addressed Tehran’s offer, but said on May 10 that Iranians will never bow their heads to their enemies, and that if dialogue or negotiations occur, it does not mean surrender or retreat. Trump later wrote on his social network Truth Social that he had just heard “the response from Iran’s so-called ‘representatives’,” and that he did not like it and that it was completely unacceptable.
The US news agency Axios reported that the 14-point American memorandum includes conditions such as suspending uranium enrichment, lifting sanctions and restoring free shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The agency cited two US officials and two other sources who indicated that
the points included in the memorandum will also be part of a final peace agreement, when one is reached.
Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to an increase in oil prices. The US, in turn, has imposed a naval blockade, preventing ships from leaving or entering Iranian ports. The Americans are trying to put economic pressure on Tehran by denying it the opportunity to profit from oil sales.
Iran has warned its neighbors of the consequences if it complies with US sanctions. The IRNA news agency reported that army spokesman Mohammad Akramini said that ships planning to pass through the Strait of Hormuz must first coordinate with Iran, otherwise they will face serious consequences. He noted that the Americans will never be able to create a real blockade covering the entire northern Indian Ocean.
On May 9, it was reported that the British Royal Navy was sending a warship to the Middle East to join an international mission aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, has taken charge of the mission, and the British have said it will only begin when active hostilities in the region end. Iran has responded by saying that if any British or French ship enters the strait, it will face decisive and immediate action from Tehran.
More than 40 defense ministers are scheduled to meet on the 11th of May to discuss Britain’s plans to secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
