Turkey has agreed to submit the decision on supporting Sweden’s entry to NATO to its parliament for ratification as soon as possible, as announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday, the 10th of June.
On the eve of the NATO summit in Vilnius Stoltenberg met with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, hoping to convince Ankara to put aside their objections to adding Sweden to the alliance.
However, in a joint announcement that was released after the meeting of the three officials there was still no mention how long it will take Turkey to complete the ratification procedure.
Before then Erdogan had announced supporting the addition of Sweden to NATO only if the European Union restarts the halted entry talks with Ankara.
