Latvian VDD actively monitors information space; Grevcova’s TikTok under increased observation

Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) actively monitors the online activity of 14th Saeima deputy Glorija Grevcova, including on the video sharing network TikTok, as BNN was told by VDD.
As BNN previously reported, shortly after giving her oath as deputy of 14th Saeima, Grevcova gave an interview to the radio station controlled by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko. In it she said that residents in Latvia are evicted from their homes for even the smallest utility payment debts. She also said there is a strict censure in place in Latvia.
On the same day Grevcova’s opinion regarding the destruction of Soviet heritage in Daugavpils was featured on Russian state television.

VDD told BNN that authorities continue monitoring developments in the information space to the best of their ability.

This includes Grevcova’s activity and statements made online. VDD refrained from commenting the situation in more detail.

BNN also reported that ex-deputy of Daugavpils City Council Viktors Pučka will be working in the 14th Saeima. According to authorities, he shared opinions on Facebook that coincide with Russia’s narratives about developments in Ukraine. This includes statements about Ukrainians taking half of Mariupol hostage. A couple of weeks after Russian attacks, he shared Putin’s photo with the writing «Let’s support our leader!».
Commenting on concerns that people who openly support Russia’s foreign policy course and justifies the aggression in Ukraine will be working in the 14th Saeima, VDD explained that existing regulations do not provide law enforcement institutions the right to decide on a person’s fitness to serve as Saeima deputies.
VDD reports the restrictions that prohibit a person to run in Saeima elections and be elected to the parliament are listed in Section 5 of the Law on the Election of the Saeima. Candidate evaluation is done by the Central Election Commission.
«Unfortunately, loyalty to the Latvian state is not listed as a mandatory requirement for Saeima deputy candidates,» the service adds.
