A total of 5,547 births were registered in Latvia during the first six months of this year, down 4.5%, or 262 births, compared with the same period in 2025, according to provisional data published by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.
Of the babies registered in the first half of 2026, 2,827 were boys, representing a decrease of 6.8%, or 206, compared with the same period in 2025, while 2,720 were girls, a decline of 2%, or 56.
In June, 958 births were registered in Latvia, down 4.6%, or 46 births, compared with the same month in 2025. Of these, 504 were boys and 454 were girls.
During the first six months of this year,
13,384 deaths were registered in Latvia, an increase of 1.1%, or 142 deaths,
compared with the first six months of 2025, when 13,242 deaths were recorded.
As a result, the number of registered deaths exceeded the number of births by 7,837 in the first half of this year. In the corresponding period of the previous year, deaths exceeded births by 7,433.
A total of 3,733 marriages were registered in Latvia during the first six months of 2026, down 8.9%, or 364 marriages, compared with the same period in 2025.
As of the 1st of July this year, Latvia’s provisional population stood at 1.832 million.
