Last week, between 19th and 25th September, the number of new Covid-19 infection cases in Latvia went up 1.2% when compared to the week prior, according to data from the Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC).
A total of 8 470 new Covid-19 infection cases were registered in Latvia last week. According to SPKC, the infection’s reproduction number is 1.06, which indicates a slower spread of the infection in society when compared to the week prior.
The number of hospitalised patients is up by 27%. An average of 48 people are hospitalised every day.
The number of Covid-19 infection cases went down in the 0 to 19 years age group in previous weeks. In all other age groups, however, there was an increase.

The biggest increase of new infection cases was observed in Zemgale and Latgale. A slight increase of new infection cases is observed in the European Union.

SPKC points out that upper respiratory tract infections are on a rise when compared to previous weeks. This is, however, normal for autumn.
Parents are advised to be responsible and if their children show signs of coughing, running nose, throat pain, increased body temperature, the should not be allowed to attend school. Parents should leave their children at home and contact their general practitioner, SPKC reminds.
According to the centre, adapted Covid-19 vaccines are available at general practitioners’ or vaccination rooms in Latvia. To sign up for a booster jab, residents should contact their general practitioner or vaccination room of nearby healthcare institutions that administer vaccination. It is also possible to sign up at Manavakcina.lv portal.
Vaccination is recommended to all members of society, SPKC notes, adding that it is especially recommended to healthcare personnel, seniors older than 65 years, people suffering from chronic diseases, people with suppressed immune system and their closest contact, pregnant women, tenants of social care centres and social care staff.
