This Friday, 22 July, as well as Saturday and Sunday road traffic will slow down in Latvia, as reported by state company Latvian State Roads (LVC).
LVC recommends residents to keep in mind that they may spend more time on the road than usual on their way to the coast. Road traffic is expected to be slow in Pieriga on Riga bypass and in the direction of Bauska, Ērgļi, Jelgava and Ventspils, where construction work continues.
As previously reported, on Friday, 22 July, a yellow warning is declared nation-wide in Latvia due to the intense heat. The heat affects not only people’s health but also the «health» of roads.
The heat has a strong impact on asphalt roads that are in poor state. Melting points may also form on sections of roads that had previously experienced pothole repairs. This may make the roads slippery.
Motorcycle drivers should be especially careful during this heat.
LVC reports that on 22 July between 09:30 a.m. and 15:30 p.m. repairs of road traffic monitoring sensors will be taking place on Koknese highway (P80) near the turn to Ogresgals (13.4 km). Traffic will be organised one lane using road signs.
During repairs on Daugavpils highway (A6) from Salaspils to Ikšķile, Vidzeme highway (A2) from Garkalne to Sēnīte and on Valmiera highway (A3) near Sēnīte motorists will have to make do with narrower lanes and speed restrictions, LVC reports.
LVC warns that slower road traffic is possible in Jelgava’s direction in the evening on Saturday, 23 July. The band Prāta vētra has a concert scheduled in Jelgava that day.
Motorists who plan to take Jelgava-Dalbe (P100) and Jelgava-Dobele-Annenieki (P97) should keep in mind that after the concert (23:30 p.m. – 00.30 a.m.) Lielā Street section with bridges over Lielupe and Driksa rivers will be closed down for traffic.
Construction and repair work is currently being conducted on more than 60 sections of roads in all of Latvia. LVC urges motorists to respect all restrictions imposed along sections of roads under construction and repairs and to be careful.
