On Wednesday, 18 May, Riga City Council decided to rename Moscow’s Garden as Latgale’s Park.
Multiple associations requested renaming the park. The municipal administration turned to the State Language Centre and Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the possible name change. Both institutions approved the decision. This topic was also discussed and approved by the Riga City Council’s Monuments Council.
Moscow’s Garden is a park in Riga located on the corner of Maskavas and Balvu streets.
The park was created at the end of the 30s of the previous century and was initially named Latgale’s Garden. Following the Soviet occupation both Latgales Street and the garden were renamed Maskavas Street and Moscow’s Garden.
Riga City Council has also received multiple requests to rename Maskavas Street, BNN was previously told by city council deputy Jurģis Klotiņš.
