Latvia shuts down Russian general consulates and expels their workers

On 5 April, Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to shut down Russian Federation’s general consulate in Daugavpils and Liepaja, closing down both of Russia’s representation functions.
Diplomatic workers of these consulates are declared personae non gratae in Latvia.
The ministry notes the decision was made in solidarity with Ukraine and its fight against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression and war.
Latvia once again strongly condemns Russian Federation’s aggression and wide-scale attack on Ukraine.
The international community has received a great number of witness accounts of killings, atrocities and war crimes by Russian armed forces against Ukrainian civilians, as well as efforts to target and destroy civilian property and civil infrastructure in Ukraine.

Russian Federation’s unlawful attack and war crimes committed by its armed forces represent a breach of Russia’s international obligations and duties.
Those who made, executed and supported decisions regarding the military aggression and crimes in Ukraine must take full responsibility, stresses the ministry.
On 5 April the decision was presented to ambassador of the Russian Federation in Latvia Mikhail Vanin. All diplomats marked persona non grata are to leave Latvia by 30 April.
