The man accused of killing conservative influencer Charlie Kirk has confessed to the crime to his roommate, with whom he was also romantically involved, the BBC reports.
US authorities say Tyler Robinson, 22, left a note under his computer keyboard. Utah District Attorney Jeffrey Gray said the note said Robinson saw an opportunity to get rid of Kirk and decided to take it. The prosecutor also released Robinson’s correspondence with a friend.
The suspect is being held without bail. He was charged with seven misdemeanors on the 16th of September. Prosecutors have said they will seek the maximum penalty, the death penalty.
After a 33-hour manhunt, Robinson has not confessed, and Gray stressed that the accused is innocent until proven guilty and will stand trial. Gray revealed evidence at a news conference,
including a supposed confession to a friend and DNA found on the gun used in the crime.
Describing the hidden note, Gray said Robinson had sent a message to the friend telling him to drop whatever he was doing and look under his keyboard. After reading the note, the friend, whose identity has not been released and who is cooperating with police, replied with the question “You’re kidding, right?” The Utah prosecutor detailed the correspondence between Robinson and his romantic partner. Authorities have said Robinson’s boyfriend is a transgender person who is currently transitioning to become a woman.
Gray also said that Robinson’s parents suspected their son was involved in Kirk’s murder even before his arrest. However, when the parents asked the suspect about Kirk’s murder, Robinson said he was sick and at home. The parents managed to convince Robinson to come visit, where he made it clear that he was the attacker. He also said that he would rather end it all than go to prison. With the help of a family friend, a retired police officer, the parents managed to convince their son to surrender. Robinson also allegedly told his parents that there was already too much evil and that Kirk was spreading hatred. The mother reportedly told investigators that her son had become political in recent years, when he began supporting gay and transgender rights and began a relationship with a transgender person. However, the prosecutor did not answer the question of whether Kirk was targeted because of his anti-transgender views.
