In the first four months of this year, 3,732 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 13.9% or 600 fewer than in the same period of 2024, according to provisional data released by the Central Statistical Bureau.
Of these, 1,940 were boys — 8.1% or 170 fewer than during the same period last year — and 1,792 were girls, marking a 19.4% decrease, or 430 fewer than in 2024.
In April, 976 newborns were registered, 10.9% or 120 fewer than in the same month last year. Of these, 517 were boys and 459 were girls.
As a result, and according to the new evaluation method introduced in 2025,
the number of registered newborns in Latvia has remained below 1,000 for six consecutive months.
In November 2024, 959 births were registered; in December – 933; in January 2025 – 881; in February – 890; and in March – 985.
During the same four-month period this year, 8,945 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 6.1% or 586 fewer than in the first four months of 2024, when 9,531 deaths were recorded.
Thus, the number of deaths exceeded births by 5,213 in the first four months of 2025 — a figure slightly higher than the gap of 5,199 during the same period in 2024.
In the first four months of 2025, 1,974 marriages were registered in Latvia — an increase of 21.6%, or 350 more than in the same period last year.
As of May 1, 2025, the provisional population of Latvia was 1.833 million.
