Russia fired more than 3 000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones and 400 missiles at Ukraine in March alone, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday, the 3rd of April. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Zelensky signed a bill lowering the mobilisation age from 27 to 25, which could help Ukraine in its war with Russia, reports Reuters.
Over the past two weeks, Russia has stepped up its campaign of long-range air strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, destroying part of a system already weakened by previous Russian bombardments during the 25-month invasion.
Russia has also increased its use of guided aerial bombs in front-line areas in recent months.
They are dropped from warplanes in Russian-controlled territory and glide at high speed towards their target.
Moscow prefers this method because it is capable of delivering large quantities of explosives to Ukrainian positions and structures near the front, prioritising the impact of the blast over accuracy.
Meanwhile, the draft law on lowering the age of mobilisation should increase the number of civilians that the army can mobilise to fight under the country’s martial law, which has been in force since February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion.
Zelenskyy additionally signed two bills: one requiring re-evaluation of men who are exempted from military service due to a disability, and another to create an online database of potential eligibility for military service.
These measures are aimed at boosting recruitment to the army,
given concerns that another Russian offensive is expected this spring or summer.
After the initial shock of the invasion has passed, the number of volunteer fighters in Ukraine has decreased significantly and many cases of draft evasion have been reported.
