New York mayoral election won by former policeman

In the largest city of the US, the mayoral election have been held, where a former policeman and long-time head of a Now York city borough, Eric Adams, has won, American news agency Associated Press reports.

In the city of 8.8 million people, the mayoral election was held on Tuesday, November 2. It was won by Democratic Party candidate, the Borough President of Brooklyn, Eric Adams.
The Mayor-elect, who will become the second African-American mayor of the city, first won in the summer of 2021 in a crowded Democratic primary after he struck a nuanced stance on law enforcement issues. Adams’ message on crime and his experience as a police officer largely insulated him from attacks from his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa, who was the founder of the Guardian Angels anti-crime patrol.

During his campaign, Adams recalled being beaten by police officers as a teenager when he was arrested for trespassing. Later, as a policeman, he had been a vocal critic of the police department, advocated for African-American officers and spoke out about injustices. The Democratic Party candidate, however, he did not support calls from some progressives to defund the New York police by shifting money from law enforcement to social work and other programs aimed at addressing the root causes of crime, according to Associated Press.
