YouTube and other social media restrict Russian state media ads and income

As Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, American e-commerce giant Google has become the latest social media platform to prevent Russian state media platforms from placing ads and receiving income, following in the footsteps of YouTube and Facebook, according to US media organisation CNN.
«In response to the war in Ukraine, we are pausing Google monetization of Russian state-funded media across our platforms,» Google said CNN Business on Sunday, February 27. «We’re actively monitoring new developments and will take further steps if necessary.»

Over the past weekend, YouTube announced it would temporarily halt the ability of a number of Russian channels, such as state-sponsored RT to monetize their content on the platform. It also planned to «significantly limit» recommendations to those channels.
The announcement by Google followed the ban announced Friday, February 25 by Meta (Facebook), on Russian state media’s ability to run ads and monetize them on the world’s largest social network. Meta’s head of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said on Twitter on Saturday, February 26, that the company would move on to put labels on additional Russian state media posts, CNN reports.
