Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėdas has warned that NATO should strengthen its eastern flank if Belarus actually hosts Yevgeny Prigozhin, Lithuanian public media LRT reports.
When Prigozhin announced that his fighters would stop advancing on Moscow, the Kremlin reported that the owner of the Wagner Group would go to Belarus and face no charges. Nausėda said on the 25th of June: “If Prigozhin or part of the Wagner Group ends up in Belarus with unclear plans and unclear intentions,
it will only mean that we need to further strengthen the security of our eastern borders.”
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė stated that the events in Russia do not pose a direct threat to Lithuania. She pointed out that the borders are closely watched and said that the more “the world’s second strongest army” worries about mutiny in its ranks, the less work is left for Ukraine.
In February, an adviser to the Lithuanian president said that Wagner’s Group could test the defense capabilities of the West by attacking the Baltic states. However, when giving an interview at that time, the adviser did not provide any evidence for his assumption.
