Rain, thunderstorms and strong winds expected across Latvia this weekend

Friday will be mostly cloudy, although sunny spells are expected at times. Rain is forecast in many parts of the country, with thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours possible, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Light winds will prevail, while along the coast a light to moderate southerly and southwesterly wind will strengthen overnight, with gusts reaching up to 15 metres per second. During the day, light southerly winds will continue in eastern Latvia, while western regions will see light to moderate southwesterly and southerly winds, with gusts reaching 15–17 metres per second. Overnight temperatures will range from 12 to 17 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures will rise to 17–22 degrees Celsius.

Weather conditions will remain changeable over the weekend. Skies will be mostly cloudy, although there will be occasional sunny intervals. Rain is expected in many areas on both Saturday and Sunday, with thunderstorms and locally heavy downpours also possible.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre said that on Saturday a moderate southwesterly to westerly wind will gradually shift to a westerly and northwesterly direction during the day. Along the coast, winds will be gusty, with gusts reaching up to 20 metres per second along the seashore in the morning. On Sunday, winds will weaken and remain predominantly from the west and southwest. Night-time temperatures on both days will range between 13 and 17 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures will reach 16–20 degrees Celsius.

Next week, weather conditions in Latvia will be mainly influenced by cyclonic activity, resulting in frequent cloud cover and precipitation across much of the country.

Forecasters also expect rainfall to gradually decrease by the middle of next week, although eastern regions are likely to continue seeing more frequent rain than western Latvia. During the first half of the week, temperatures will remain moderately warm, with daytime highs averaging around 20 degrees Celsius. From Thursday onwards, warmer air is expected to move into Latvia, bringing more pleasant weather, increased sunshine and fewer showers.
