Using EU funds, Latvia has plans to develop more than 2 000 electric car recharge points

Latvia’s power network distributor Sadales tīkls JSC and other state institutions have plans to develop more than 2 000 public electric vehicle recharge points across Latvia, as reported by the company.
The project is planned to be implemented using support from the European Union Recovery Fund. EUR 5 million will be allocated towards construction of necessary infrastructure.
According to the company, the project’s goal is establishing 2 060 connection points for public recharging services for electric vehicles across Latvia. It is planned for the infrastructure connecting the power network and recharging points to be designed and constructed by Sadales tīkls, whereas infrastructure connecting the distributor and recharging stations will be entrusted to cooperation partners.

Locations of recharging stations will be known once contracts have been signed with cooperation partners.

According to Sadales tīkls development director Jānis Kirkovalds says approximately 2 939 electric cars were registered in Latvia by 1 July 2022, with the total number being slightly above 2 100 at the beginning of the year.
«This means that in six months the number of electric cars in Latvia has increased by 35%. Expansion of public recharging infrastructure would help promote the increase of electric vehicles and expand electrification, which plays a major part in reaching EU’s Green Course goals and further enhancing the country’s energy independence,» said Kirkovalds.
