Republican candidate Donald Trump announced his victory on Wednesday, the 6th of November, in the US presidential election held on Tuesday.
After winning in the swing states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia and leading in the other four states, Trump appears to be closing in on victory, according to Reuters.
According to the latest estimates by the TV channels, Trump is just a few votes short of the 270 electoral votes he needs to win and the Democratic candidate, current Vice President Kamala Harris, no longer has a chance of beating him.
“We overcame obstacles that no one thought could be overcome,” Trump said, addressing supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida. “This is a political victory unlike any our country has ever seen.”
“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Trump stressed, referring to the fact that the Republicans regained control of the Senate from the Democrats in Tuesday’s elections.
He also took a few minutes to praise the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who contributed around 120 million US dollars to the Trump campaign. Trump has announced that he will appoint Musk to head the Commission on Government Effectiveness.
Harris did not address her supporters gathered at Howard University. Her campaign co-chair, Sedrick Richmond, briefly addressed the crowd after midnight, saying that Harris would speak publicly on Wednesday.
“There are still votes to be counted,” he said.
