Riga City Council reports that the number of poor and low-income residents in the capital city continues going down. The same can be said for the number of social benefit recipients, according to information compiled by the city council’s Welfare Department.
Since the start of the year the number of registered poor residents in Riga has gone down from 10 840 to 9 944. The number of low-income residents has gone down from 8 581 to 7 736.
In June, when compared with May,
the number of recipients of social benefits has gone down by 4 227 or 23%,
whereas the volume of used funding has gone down by EUR 797 527 or 27%.
The number of social benefit recipients has gone down by 4 285 or 23% in June 2023 as compared with the same month of 2022. The amount of funding used on social benefits has gone down by EUR 624 387 or 23%.
This is because
the number of Ukrainian civilians in Riga has stabilised and has gone down.
These people are paid social benefits in accordance with the law.
The number of social benefit recipients in the first half year of 2023, when compared with the same period of 2022, went down by 607 people or 2%, whereas the volume of funding used on social benefits increased by EUR 4 162 873 or 26% in six months.
Riga City Council paid a total of EUR 20.4 million or 59% of the year’s plan in social benefits in the first half of the year of 2023. EUR 14.4 million was spent on benefits for Riga residents and EUR 5.9 million was spent on Ukrainian refugees.
