State of emergency on Latvian-Belarusian border extended until August

On 10 May Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers decided to extend the state of emergency in Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava and Daugavpils for three more months – until 10 August, as reported by Ministry of the Interior.
Although the number of illegal border-crossing attempts have gone down on the Latvian-Belarusian border, a total of 22 people were deterred from the border in April and start of May.
One important factor is Russia’s war in Ukraine, which is also supported by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko. Latvian-Belarusian border is under constant and tight control, as reported by the ministry.
Lithuania decided to extend the state of emergency until 29 June 2022, and Poland – until 30 June 2022.
The ministry reports that it is highly important to coordinate international cooperation in relation to prevention of illegal border-crossing activity and reinforce regional security.
