Same-sex marriages legal in Estonia; couples will be able to adopt children as well

As of the 1st of January 2024 same-sex marriages are legal in Estonia.
On the 20th of June 2023 the Estonian parliament passed the law that legalised same-sex couples in the country. The law came into force on the 1st of January 2024. It provides the right of marriage between two adult people regardless of their gender.
The law also maintains the option for same-sex couples to sign a cohabitation agreement. It also states that registered couples will be able to undergo a simplified marriage procedure. In Estonia same-sex couples have been able to sign cohabitation agreement since 2016.

From now on, however, same-sex couples will also be able to adopt children.

Married same-sex couples will be able to adopt their spouse’s child with permission from the biological parent.
The law lists a principle under which a child cannot have more than two parents. It also preserves the principle that the rights and obligations in relation to a child are first and foremost the responsibility of biological parents.
