«Latvia is prepared to participate in the recovery of Ukraine, and our civil society and private sector are committed to providing Ukraine with their full support,» said Saeima speaker Ināra Mūrniece, addressing participants of a conference dedicated to the restoration of Ukraine in Swiss city of Lugano on Tuesday, 7 July.
Russia’s war in Ukraine has caused serious long-term geopolitical, economic and humanitarian consequences far outside of Europe, said the Saeima speaker, stressing that what the world needs to see clearly is that Ukraine is the victim in this war.
Lasting peace and security in Europe can only be secured through Ukraine’s full victory and Russia’s complete defeat. The sooner this is accomplished, the sooner economic recovery and growth can commence, said Mūrniece.
«Ukraine’s government needs to outline the priorities of their state recovery plan. The decision to provide Ukraine candidate state status clearly anchors the country on the map of the European Union,» said the Saeima speaker, adding that support for Ukraine needs to be coupled with reforms to help bring it closer to the European Union.
«Once the war is over Ukraine’s goal will be becoming a modern European country. We are interested in making this dream a reality,» said Mūrniece.
The Saeima speaker is away on an official visit to Switzerland, where she participates in a conference dedicated to the restoration of Ukraine. It is focused on Ukraine’s recovery and development plan and the necessary investments from international partners.

Ukraine-focused conference is organised every year since 2017. It was previously known as the Ukraine reform conference. This year the conference was renamed as Ukraine recovery conference.
