Russian citizen detained for bribe offer to Latvian border guard

Last Friday, a Russian citizen was detained at Grebneva border checkpoint for attempting to give a border guard a bribe of EUR 30, as reported by the State Border Guard.
During routine processing of a queue of vehicles through A13 (Russian border (Grebneva)-Rezekne, Daugavpils-Lithuanian border (Medumi)), border guards encountered a Russian citizen entering Latvia. H wanted border guards to issue a permit to a truck that would be entering Latvia a couple of days later.
The man offered the border guard EUR 30, which was a bribe in exchange for the issuance of a permit to a vehicle that was not in the active queue of vehicles passing through the border.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated for bribery against the Russian citizen in accordance with Section 323, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law. The person has been recognised as a suspect and placed under arrest as a security measure.
The State Border Guard emphasizes that bribery qualifies as a serious crime, the punishment for which, in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law, is deprivation of freedom for up to five years, temporary imprisonment, forced labour or a fine in the amount of ten to two thousand minimum monthly wages specified by the Republic of Latvia.
