Rain band to sweep across Latvia this weekend, bringing significantly cooler weather

After several warm and mostly dry days, similar conditions are expected to continue on Friday, the 17th of July. However, over the weekend the influence of a cyclone will strengthen once again, bringing a rain band across Latvia. Heavy downpours and thunderstorms are expected in some areas, while southerly winds will strengthen and become gusty in places, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Friday will see partly cloudy skies, with sunny conditions expected across eastern Latvia. Isolated light, short-lived showers are possible. With light winds, fog may develop in some areas overnight. Night-time temperatures will range from +14°C to +19°C, falling to +10°C to +14°C in the eastern part of the country. During the day, temperatures will rise to +24°C to +29°C, while coastal areas will remain slightly cooler at +22°C to +24°C.

As the cyclone’s influence increases over the weekend, cloud cover will gradually build, although sunny spells are still expected.

During the night into Saturday, isolated showers are forecast in western Latvia. By Saturday afternoon, a rain band will begin moving across the country from the west, bringing rain to many areas, including heavy downpours and thunderstorms in parts of western and central Latvia.

Light winds will persist overnight into Saturday, with fog forming in some locations.

From Saturday morning onwards, southerly winds will strengthen, with gusts reaching up to 15 metres per second.

Night-time temperatures will remain between +15°C and +20°C. Saturday will still be hot, with temperatures climbing to +24°C to +29°C across much of the country. By Sunday, however, significantly cooler air will arrive, with daytime highs falling to +18°C to +23°C.

At the beginning of next week, a new cyclone is expected to develop near Latvia’s border, bringing periods of rain, some of which may be prolonged and locally heavy. Daytime temperatures will drop to around +20°C. Northerly winds will dominate, remaining moderate and occasionally gusty in coastal areas.
