In his interview to Latvijas Radio programme “Krustpunktā”, Latvian Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns said he has a good idea which officials had overextended in their authority with the implementation of Rail Baltica project.
He said in the end result there are signs which officials have acted outside the boundaries of their authority, adding that the prosecutor’s office is aware of the officials in question. However, he said he cannot speak of it publicly, as there is an ongoing criminal procedure.
LETA previously reported that upon conclusion of its investigation, the Prosecutor General’s Office initiated criminal proceedings to look into the possible illegalities committed by officials responsible for Rail Baltica.
As LETA was informed by the prosecutor’s office, criminal proceedings were initiated for the fact that the state officials responsible for the implementation of the Rail Baltica project may have caused losses to the state budget on a large scale in connection with the construction of the Rail Baltica infrastructure facilities.
The criminal procedure was not directed at any specific individuals.
In accordance with the decision of the Prosecutor General regarding the determination of institutional jurisdiction, the criminal proceedings have been transferred to the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB). In the interest of the investigation, no more detailed information about the criminal proceedings initiated will be provided at this time.
KNAB told LETA that the office is familiar with the criminal proceedings materials received from the prosecutor’s office. KNAB will then decide on the next steps, including the establishment of an investigation team.
As previously reported, on the 10th of December 2024, Latvian government agreed on the implementation scenario for the first stage of Rail Baltica.
