Motor oil leaks from lumber company impacted by flood in Jekabpils

Latvia’s State Environment Service (VVD) reports that the flood in Jekabpils has reached local Ošukalns LLC wood processing plant on Bebru Street 104A. There VVD experts found a leak of 1 000 l of motor oil.
The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) responded quickly and limited the leak using booms. Other solutions are considered to prevent pollution. The company holds a category B polluting activity permit, as petrol products, oils, motor oil and other dangerous substances are present within the company’s territory.
Ošukalns LLC reports that the company shut down all operations on Bebru Street 104 on Saturday, the 14th of January, due to the flood. Operations remained ceased on Monday, the 16th of January, as well. Water is being pumped from the company’s territory and clean-up efforts are underway.
The wood processing company is «committed to doing everything possible to maintain workload in other areas of the company to overcome the idleness caused by the flood». The company is also grateful to rescuers for their assistance.

The company does not mention the motor oil leak.

Considering that floods always cause pollution, VVD has informed all businesses in Jekabpils issued with permits and C certificates that they are required to perform preventive measures to help combat floods and prevent pollution, the risk of pollution and disasters.
