Minister of Healthcare says there is no reason to panic over increasing Covid-19 infection cases

Currently there is no reason to be alarmed over the growing number of Covid-19 infection cases, said Latvian Minister of Health Daniels Pavļuts.
In the last couple of weeks there has been a rapidly increasing number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia. Multiple experts have said there is to cause for alarm – no significant increase of hospitalisations or deaths is expected in the near future. The increase is related to lifted restrictions, residents’ wish to attend events and the long Jāņi holiday.
The minister said there is an increase of Covid-19 cases, but the ministry’s specialists say that

there is no reason to tighten epidemiological safety measures or panic.

«We can see infection rates have gone up after the holiday. I think many of us hear from friends and acquaintances about new infections every day, but to us the most important factor is the situation in hospitals. Respectively, what is the number of primarily Covid-19 infection cases, the number of severe cases and the number of deaths. These indexes are currently stable in Latvia,» said Pavļuts.
He said the Ministry of Health has developed three scenarios for a possible Covid-19 outbreak in autumn. The scenarios are currently undergoing coordination with the Ministry of Finance. Pavļuts hopes the government will review it in the coming weeks.
After the long holiday in June the number of Covid-19 infection cases reached 824, which is the second highest number after 21 April, when 1 133 infections were reported, according to data from the Disease Prevention and Monitoring Centre.
