Latvian Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša will ask Latvian National Sports Council to decide on allocation of funding towards the organisation of the 2023 World Ice Hockey Championship in Latvia, as confirmed by the ministry’s Communications Office.
Until now there were no plans to provide any additional budget funds for Latvian Hockey Federation to help cover championship-related costs. Coordinating the championship’s organisaton in Latvia, on the 19th of May 2022 LHF requested organisational and financial support.
Considering the importance of the event for Latvia and the world, the Ministry of Education and Science plans to make a «decision to decide» on allocation of budget funds for Latvian Hockey Federation in order to cover licence costs.
BNN was informed by the minister’s office that the funding in question may reach EUR 750 000.
The ministry plans to present organisers of the 2023 World Ice Hockey Championship with additional conditions. These may include requirements for children’s and youngsters’ possible inclusion in physical activities.
