German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on the 25th of August that drones found near Leipzig airport clearly show that Germany is under threat, writes Politico.
Merz noted that the incident in Leipzig, along with other incidents, shows that Germans face a very real threat, and that Germany has come under the attention of organizers of hybrid attacks.
After an airport employee found a drone with explosives attached but the detonator had not worked, German counterterrorism authorities launched an investigation on the 5th of August. On the 14th of August, investigators found another drone near Leipzig airport. Leipzig airport is home to a major NATO logistics base.
Merz said German authorities and security agencies were working to complete the investigation and that the findings would be made public soon. According to German media outlet Bild, Merz told party members in a private meeting on the 24th of August that
the government had substantial evidence pointing to the perpetrators of the crime.
In early August, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt hinted that foreign agents could be behind the airport bombings.
The Merz government is looking at ways to give German intelligence more powers to mitigate threats from enemies such as Russia. The intelligence agency’s report for the past year said that the security situation in Germany has deteriorated significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
