The Lithuanian Border Guard has announced that a tunnel leading from Belarus to Lithuania has been discovered, and it was most likely prepared for the illegal movement of migrants.
Border Guard officers discovered the tunnel on the 22nd of July, when underground vibrations were detected near the border in the southern Lithuanian county of Varėnis, indicating possible tunnel digging from the Belarusian side.
Lithuanian colleagues were assisted by Polish colleagues with special equipment designed to search for underground tunnels. After drilling, the border guards discovered a tunnel that had not yet been opened on Lithuanian territory. The diameter of the discovered tunnel is about a meter, and it is located 1.5 meters underground.
Tunnels that were used both for smuggling products and for moving people from Belarus have also been found in both Lithuania and Poland in the past.
