Latvian parliament passes law amendments to ensure uninterrupted sea port operations

On Thursday, the 2nd of February, the Saeima passed in the final reading urgent amendments that provide for extension of the term for liquidation of authorities of Riga and Ventspils freeport, as reported by Saeima’s press-service.
91 deputies voted in favour of amendments. None voted against or abstained in the vote. Amendments extend the deadline for the liquidation of authorities of the two freeports until the 31st of December 2023. These amendments are necessary in order to ensure uninterrupted operation of the sea port reform.

The previous redaction of the Law on Ports stated the liquidation was to be completed by the end of 2022.

Chairperson of Saeima’s Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee, which is responsible for the legislative draft, Linda Matisone previously mentioned the committee will continue discussions about the sea port reform’s implementation – including the involvement of municipal administrations in this process.
«The committee agreed on the schedule for the improvement of the reform. The first phase is to happen under supervision from the Ministry of Transport,» reports Matisone.
The law will come into force on the next day after it is approved and promulgated by the state president.
