Latvian Central Election Commission loses its «head»

Following the start of criminal proceedings by Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) over the procurement organised in 2021, Kristīne Bērziņa is no longer the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CVK), as confirmed by the official.
In accordance with the Law on the Central Election Commission, in the absence of the chairman, the commission is to be represented by the vice-chairman, Bērziņa explains.
She admits: «It is sad that I was pulled into this process even though I have always worked honestly to organise elections within terms required by the law».
«I have never clung to my post. This summer I made it clear that because of the critical state of the institution when it comes to funding and human resources I will not be staying for another term,» stressed Bērziņa.

The now ex-head of CVK also said that she will continue cooperating with KNAB to assist and provide all the necessary information the investigation may require.

At the same time, Bērziņa said she has signed a non-disclosure agreement. This means she is unable to comment the investigation.
BNN previously reported that on 7 November KNAB commenced criminal proceedings over the procurement organised by the Central Election Commission in 2021. Criminal proceedings involve ten persons, including six officials.
