Latvia considers creating a brigade of Ukrainian soldiers modeled after the French Foreign Legion

The political party For Latvia’s Development has included the creation of a special brigade within the National Armed Forces of Latvia (NBS) among its key priorities for the next parliamentary term. The brigade would include demobilized Ukrainian soldiers with combat experience, operating similarly to the French Foreign Legion.

Experienced soldiers who express such a wish would be granted Latvian citizenship in order to fully integrate them into Latvia’s defence system. The party pledges to secure a bilateral agreement with the Ukrainian government that would ensure mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthen the joint front of both countries against the threat of Russian aggression.

At the same time, a legal and organizational framework would be created to enable Latvian citizens who have fought or are currently fighting on Ukraine’s side to actively contribute to strengthening Latvia’s military capabilities.

“Experienced defenders of Ukraine have gained unique combat experience while fighting Russian aggression. By integrating them into our defence structures and granting citizenship, if they wish, we are not only increasing Latvia’s military readiness and security, but also demonstrating genuine and practical solidarity with Ukraine while building a stronger common front against the authoritarian threat Russia poses to the sovereignty of our countries,” said Artis Pabriks, board member of “For Latvia’s Development” and head of the think tank Northern Europe Policy Centre.

THE INITIATIVE IS PART OF THE PARTY’S BROADER STRATEGY TO STRENGTHEN NATIONAL DEFENCE AND SECURITY POLICY,

emphasizing that effective action in a geopolitically complex period is not a choice, but a necessity.

This approach is based on a comprehensive vision of Latvia’s national security, in which increasing military capabilities, strengthening international cooperation, and seeking innovative solutions are considered key pillars.

“For Latvia’s Development” believes that in today’s geopolitical environment, where Russian aggression poses real and long-term threats to all of Europe, it is necessary to seek not only traditional but also practical and rapidly implementable solutions that can immediately improve Latvia’s defence and response capabilities.

The party argues that the initiative would not only supplement existing NBS resources with combat-experienced specialists, but would also promote long-term cooperation with Ukraine, ensuring that Latvia becomes an active, reliable, and strong participant in collective security and regional stability.
