Large rain system approaches Latvia – heavy rainfall expected on Saturday

Weather conditions in Latvia over the coming days will be shaped by active cyclonic activity, bringing cloudy and rainy weather, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Saturday is expected to be the wettest day, when a broad precipitation system will cross the country. Prolonged and heavy rain is expected across much of Latvia, with very heavy rainfall in some areas. Thunderstorms will also develop, bringing intense downpours and sudden strong wind gusts. Rainy conditions will persist into the beginning of next week, but the influence of high pressure will strengthen later in the week, bringing sunnier and drier weather.

While only isolated areas will see brief showers on Friday, rainfall will become widespread over the weekend.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre says significant amounts of precipitation are expected on Saturday. Rain will be prolonged and heavy across most of the country, with very heavy rainfall possible in parts of central and eastern Latvia. An orange-level weather warning could be issued.

There is even a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas,

potentially meeting the criteria for a red-level warning. However, the intensity and location of the heaviest precipitation will depend significantly on the position of the cyclone’s centre, which may still shift as newer forecasts become available.

Thunderstorms will also develop over Latvia during the weekend. On Saturday, sudden wind gusts beneath thunderstorm clouds could reach between fifteen and eighteen metres per second, locally up to twenty metres per second.

Fog will form in some areas overnight into Saturday and during the morning, reducing visibility. Overnight temperatures will fall to between plus eleven and plus sixteen degrees, while daytime highs will range between plus fifteen and plus nineteen degrees. Friday will still be warmer, with temperatures reaching between plus nineteen and plus twenty-four degrees.

Rain will continue into the beginning of next week, with Monday also expected to be a wet day. Atmospheric pressure will rise as the week progresses, bringing calmer conditions, light winds and days without significant precipitation.

With more sunshine, daytime temperatures will rise by a few degrees, and in the second half of the week temperatures could reach around plus twenty-five degrees, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
