Jehovah’s witnesses religious organization’s investigated for compliance with regulations

The office of the prosecutor in Latvia has commenced an inspection of Jehovah’s witnesses religious organisation for compliance with country’s laws, as confirmed by law enforcement institution.
The office of the prosecutor reports this week there were two articles posted on TVNet. The content in those articles suggests the activities of the aforementioned religious organisation may be in breach of Latvia’s Constitution and other laws,
as well as potentially put at risk public order, people’s health and virtues.
According to the Law on Religious Organisations, no one is allowed to ignore the law due to their religious views, and religious organisations can be shut down with a ruling of a court of law if it is concluded that activities of said religious organisation is in breach of the Constitution or other laws and regulations. Only the prosecutor general has the authority to submit such a request to a court of law.
Following the 30 March resolution of the acting prosecutor general, the prosecutor in charge of the case is ordered to check the compliance of activities of Jehovah’s witnesses religious organisations with Latvia’s laws and regulations.
The office of the prosecutor reminds that on 23 March 2020 the prosecutor general submitted to Vidzeme district court a request to shut down all activities of the First Evangelical Congregation of Jesus religious organisation.
The office of the prosecutor also performed inspections and submitted a request to Riga City Pārdaugava Court on 10 November 2021 to shut down all activities of Evangelical Christian Church’s New Generation Riga Congregation and New Generation Evangelical Christian Church.
