Heatwave expected – local thunderstorms and the onset of meteorological summer

On Wednesday, skies will be mostly clear with no significant precipitation expected. A light to moderate wind will continue to blow from the south. As warmer air masses flow into Latvia during the day, air temperatures will rise to between +18°C and +23°C, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

On Thursday, skies will be mostly cloudy, with only occasional clearings. Rain is expected across the entire country, with heavy thunderstorms in some areas. Fog will form along the coast during the day. Winds will be light to moderate from the southeast and south, gradually turning from the west and southwest during the day. In eastern regions, gusts may reach 15–19 m/s, and during thunderstorms, even up to 20–22 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will drop to +10°C to +15°C, while daytime highs will range from +20°C to +25°C; however, along the coast and parts of Vidzeme, it may remain cooler at +15°C to +20°C.

According to the Meteorology Centre, Friday will remain mostly cloudy with widespread rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. However, rainfall intensity is expected to be lower than on Thursday. Fog will form overnight in many parts of the central and eastern regions. Winds will be light to moderate from the southwest and south. Daytime temperatures will rise to +18°C to +23°C in many places.

Over the weekend, the weather will continue to be rainy, with the heaviest precipitation forecast for eastern Latvia. Nighttime temperatures will not fall below +10°C, and during the day, many areas will see temperatures rise to or above +20°C.

With the arrival of warmer weather, meteorological summer is expected to begin in parts of Latvia in the coming days. This is defined as five consecutive days with an average daily temperature of at least +15°C.

Meteorologists note that during April’s heatwave, meteorological summer had already arrived unusually early in Daugavpils and Rēzekne, and last week it began in Riga.
