The first Lithuanian soldier to fight against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 43-year-old Tadas Tumas, was killed on Friday the 23rd of February when a Russian drone hit a moving car, confirmed Sigitas Maliauskas, head of the instructor mission Snake Island.
“This information has reached the Lithuanian Embassy in Kyiv and us. Initial information is that he was killed near Bakhmut,” Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas also confirmed the soldier’s death.
Tumas and another Ukrainian soldier, who also died in the Russian drone attack, were taking mines to the front lines,
Maliauskas said. According to him, the Lithuanian soldier served in the 92nd Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and as a volunteer soldier for just over three months and performed various duties on the front line near Bakhmut.
The fallen soldier left a wife and two children in Lithuania.
Previously, there were only reports of Lithuanian soldiers wounded in fighting in Ukraine.
