Europe needs to take greater responsibility for its security, says Latvian president

Europe should take more responsibility for its security and defence, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
In regards to the upcoming US elections, Rinkēvičs said that regardless of the outcome, regardless who US citizens elect as president, Europe needs to take greater responsibility for its security and defence. Both in NATO and outside of it, he added.
The president said Latvia historically has had good cooperation with both democrats and republicans. At the same time, Europe needs to to invest more money in its defences.
As for the overall security situation in the world, Rinkēvičs stressed global and regional security are mutually linked. Even events in the Middle East affect security in Latvia.
“It is difficult to say if those years of peace were the norm or an exception. If we look at the 20th century – conflicts were constant,” said the Latvian president.
At the same time, Rinkēvičs notes that the public, using various modern technologies, are learning more and more about various events from around the world information about which was not available 30 years ago.
