Estonians increasingly switch from cars to public transport

How are Estonians coping with high fuel prices? They buy less fuel and opt for public transport as Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports quoting public transport companies and petrol stations.
Estonian train company Elron has seen a 40 percent increase in passengers compared to the beginning of 2022. «There is an increase in all routes, but if we compare with the pre-pandemic times, we see that the longer routes, Tallinn—Tartu, Tallinn—Narva, Tallinn—Viljandi, are the ones where the growth has been highest. We have more passengers there than there were before the pandemic,» Elron sales head Ronnie Kongo noted.
Intercity bus company Lux Express has seen a 20 percent increase in passengers, board member Ingmar Roos said to ERR. He explained this with both the pandemic and rising fuel costs.
As to the consumption of fuel, sales have showed a downward trend in Estonian petrol stations. The Estonian Oil Association noted to ERR that gas sales have decreased by 7-10 percent this month and a similar pattern has been seen in spring 2022.
