Estonian President not to attend Beijing Olympics amid international boycott

As the leaders of the US and a number of other English-speaking countries have announced their diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics in next February, Estonian President Alar Karis has also said he would not go to the Chinese capital, Estonian daily Postimees and broadcaster ERR report.
Alar Karis, who took office this autumn, said to TV channel Kanal 2 about the decision, Postimees reported. The Estonian President quoted political reasons for the decision and added that heads of state of neighbouring countries would also avoid the Beijing Olympics.

In a reaction, a Chinese spokesperson commented: «Nobody cares whether they come or not».
Estonian public broadcaster ERR informed that Karis’ stance may also have been made in line with a joint EU position, one which may be talked about at next week’s meeting of EU member state foreign ministers.
