Diplomat Baiba Braže proposed for the post of Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs

Diplomat Baiba Braže is named as a perspective candidate for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, as journalists were told by Prime Minister Evika Siliņa on Monday, the 15th of April.
Special Assignments Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Braže held different posts in the foreign affairs service in the past. She also served as Latvia’s ambassador to multiple countries. Before becoming the special assignments ambassador in summer 2023, she served as NATO Deputy Secretary General for Public Diplomacy.
Braže was unofficially mentioned as the most probable candidate after Krišjānis Kariņš announced his decision to step down as Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Other candidates from the ranks of New Unity were mentioned as well – former parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Saeima deputy Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis and others. However, there are different reasons why they are not considered realistic candidates.
Various Saeima factions have said they want to meet with candidates. The potential minister of foreign affairs also needs to be interviewed by the president.
As previously reported, the seat of the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs became vacant after Kariņš left because of the special flights scandal.
