As votes are still being counted, it is clear that the Democratic Party has secured several historic victories, wresting power from Republicans in states that had previously been staunchly Republican, reports the BBC.With a series of Senate victories in states that had been Republican for decades—and, in the case of Kansas, for nearly a century—a “blue wave” (blue being the color of the Democratic Party) has swept across the country, stripping the Republicans of power. With US President Donald Trump’s second term now at its midpoint, the Democrats will hold a majority in the House of Representatives and have also regained a majority in the Senate. This means that Democrats will be able to influence Trump’s agenda and launch investigations into administration officials. An attempt to initiate impeachment proceedings is also a possibility. Back in January 2025, when Trump returned to the White House, few could have imagined such a scenario. As public sentiment toward Trump and the Republicans turned increasingly sour, Democrats began to hope they could regain control of the House of Representatives; however, the Senate seemed an unattainable goal, given the states where Trump had enjoyed strong support.Nevertheless, the Democrats managed to rewrite the political calculus, securing victories in Texas, Maine, Kansas, Iowa, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In an interview with CBS, Trump pledged to reach agreements with Democrats in Congress, noting that he did not want to spend the second half of his term rejecting the legislation they proposed. Later, however, Trump effectively walked back those comments by posting an image on his social media platform, Truth Social—featuring his signature red cap, but with the word Veto emblazoned on it. He remarked that he had not been on the ballot this year, but added that had he been, the Republicans would have won.Democrats have flipped at least six Senate seats, thereby securing a majority. Adam Hamilton won the Senate seat in Kansas—a state that had not elected a Democratic senator for nearly a century, not since the era of the Great Depression. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the race for a Senate seat, ending a 38-year streak of Democratic losses in one of the nation’s largest states.Furthermore, Democrats have unseated several Republican governors—some of whom were considered unbeatable as recently as the beginning of the year—and in Georgia, a Black woman has been elected governor for the first time.Regarding the House of Representatives, it is projected that Democrats will secure 244 seats, while Republicans will hold 165. Democrats have reclaimed House seats in Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Kentucky, and Colorado, with additional gains expected in Virginia and Indiana. In the Southern states, the party’s victory was bolstered by Black voters; the balance also shifted toward the Democrats thanks to voters of Latin American descent—a group that helped Trump win the 2024 presidential election but has since become disillusioned with him.Just two years ago, Trump won the election with the support of 48% of the electorate. Then the president began pursuing highly unpopular policies in the realms of trade and immigration, and this year launched a war against Iran—a move not supported by the majority of the public. Consequently, on the 3rd of November, Trump received a stinging rebuke that will long be remembered.
