At least 270 people have been killed in flash floods triggered by a glacier collapse in Nepal, officials reported on Thursday.
Another 826 people, including at least 579 tourists — both Nepalese and foreign nationals — are reported missing. Six Latvian citizens are among the missing.
A further 85 Nepalese soldiers and police officers are also reported missing.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Chinese-controlled Tibet, at least three people have been killed and 558 people are missing, including 260 foreign nationals.
The Nepal Tourism Board said that, as of Thursday,
authorities had been unable to establish contact with 517 foreign nationals.
Those reported missing include 179 Indian citizens, 65 US citizens, 53 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 35 Australians, 33 British citizens, 25 Canadians, nine Singaporeans, eight Germans, eight Russians, six South Africans, six Latvians, five Japanese citizens, five New Zealanders, four French citizens, three Belgians and three Spaniards.
Two citizens each from Italy, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Ireland and the Netherlands are also reported missing, along with one tourist each from Belarus, Finland, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Serbia and Sweden.
The South Korean government has also reported that nine South Koreans who were involved in the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Nepal are missing.
