Compulsory education for Ukrainian children may cost Latvia EUR 2 million this year

In order to provide education to all children of Ukrainian refugees in Latvia, financing between September and December 2024 will need to reach EUR 2 356 507. In 2025, however, this funding amount will reach EUR 4 316 027, according to the legislative draft submitted by the Ministry of Education and Science for coordination.
LETA previously reported that the Ministry of Education and Science plans to make it mandatory for all children of Ukrainian refugees in Latvia to start attending schools in person in Latvia. This requirement will apply to children of Ukrainian refugees who have reached the school age. According to estimates from the ministry, these are 1 842 children.
Ukrainian children will need to start studying in Latvian education institutions within three months of receiving temporary protection status.
The proposed legislative draft is not expected to create any strain on the state budget this year. It will be implemented as part of the support plan for Ukrainian refugees in Latvia.
In 2025, the volume of additional state funding for this purpose will reach EUR 7 823 158. The required state funding amount is expected to reach EUR 4 653 573 in 2026 and following years.
The government will discuss the issue of additional funding and prepare the legislative draft concerning the medium-term budget content and state budget for specific years.
