Cold and wet spring continues in Latvia – snow cover expected in some areas

On Monday, the 7th of April, the sky will remain cloudy, with only occasional glimpses of sunshine. Light precipitation is expected in some areas both at night and during the day, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Meteorologists are warning road users to be cautious, as roads may become slippery in certain areas! A light to moderate northerly wind will blow at night, shifting to come from the north and northwest during the day, reaching gusts of up to 14 m/s in the eastern part of the country. Nighttime air temperatures will drop to between -2°C and -7°C, while in the far western regions and along the coast of Kurzeme, where clouds will cover the sky, temperatures will range from -1°C to +2°C. During the day, air temperatures will rise to between +2°C and +6°C, with slightly warmer temperatures in the western regions.

Similar weather is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. The sky will clear at times, with intermittent precipitation, mainly wet snow and rain.

On Tuesday, a light to moderate north and northwest wind will blow, reaching gusts of up to 15 m/s in central and eastern regions during the day. On Wednesday, the wind will shift to come from the west and will blow as a moderate to moderately strong west to northwest wind starting from the morning, reaching gusts of 15–19 m/s, and up to 22 m/s in some coastal areas. Nighttime temperatures will range from -1°C to -6°C, and from -2°C to +3°C along the coast, while daytime temperatures will rise to between +2°C and +8°C.

In the second half of the week, clouds will periodically cover the sky, bringing precipitation to most parts of the country—mainly rain and wet snow, with snow also expected in the eastern regions. On Friday, a new snow cover of 2–4 cm could form in the eastern regions of Latvia. Winds will continue to be gusty in many places, and nighttime temperatures will remain below freezing.
